The Formula 1 title race just took quite the dramatic turn.

Both McLaren cars have been disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the FIA announced on Sunday (PH time).

Post-race check determined that the rearmost skid wear on the McLaren’s of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were below the required thickness.

As such, their initial results have been taken off the board. Norris finished P2 after 50 laps in Las Vegas, while Piastri was originally P4.

The disqualification also made significant changes to the Driver’s title race, as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is now tied with Piastri for P2 with 366 points.

Verstappen won the Las Vegas Grand Prix while starting P2, taking the lead from Norris on the first lap.

Norris still leads the championship battle with 390 points, but his lead is now down to 24 points with a maximum of 58 points still remaining in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

The McLaren disqualification also promoted Mercedes’ George Russell to P2 and Kimi Antonelli to P3 in Las Vegas.
