16-year-old Jaybee Sucal pulled off a thrilling 10–9 win over Paul John Ortega in his first-ever official tournament match at the 2025 Philippines Open Pool Championship.
16-year-old Jaybee Sucal made an explosive entrance into the international billiards scene after edging Paul John Ortega, 10–9, in the first round of the 2025 Philippines Open Pool Championship on Wednesday, October 22, at Gateway Mall 2.
Despite it being his first-ever official competition, the young cue artist from Cavite showed remarkable poise and confidence against a more experienced opponent.
“First time ko kasi nag-tournament kaya hindi ako [sanay]. Money game talaga ‘yung laro ko, pustahan,” Sucal shared after the match. “Hindi ako sanay sa ganito pero na-try ko naman, maayos naman.”
“Picture kayo, walang problema sa’kin”
Beaming after his debut victory, Sucal expressed his excitement and gratitude to the crowd who cheered him on.
“First time, syempre masaya ako. First time ko ito eh. Tsaka salamat sa mga nagsusuporta sa akin,” he said.
“Uubusin ko ngayon lahat ngayon, picture kayo, walang problema sa'kin. Lahat kayo hindi ako tulad ng iba dyan. Picturean dito, walang takbuhan.”
Holding his nerve
Sucal nearly saw his 9–5 lead slip away but managed to stay composed down the stretch, escaping with the win to move on.
“Hindi na makakahabol ‘yun kaso kasi, ‘yung ginawa ko, puro kasi paikot eh,” he admitted with a grin.
Message to critics
Even after his breakout performance, Sucal kept his signature bravado, directing a few words toward his online bashers.
“Eh, shoutout sa mga bashers dyan. Galit kayo, wala akong pakialam sa inyo,” he said.
Sucal will try to pull off a major upset as he goes up against Spanish pool player David Alcaide in the Round of 64.
