Philippine curlers eke out wins in Pan Continental Championships

The Philippine men’s and women’s curling teams has begun an avalanche of wins n the 2025 Pan Continental Championships in Virginia, Minnesota over the weekend.

The men’s team, who won the gold medal in the Asian Winter Games earlier this year, opened their campaign on Monday, October 20 (Tuesday, October 21, Manila time), with a convincing win over Australia, 9-3.

Coming off a six-game winning streak at their pre-Olympic Qualifying Event in Aberdeen, the Philippines picked up right where they left off with Marc Pfister, Christian Haller, Enrico Pfister, Alan Frei, and Brayden Carpenter leading the helm.

The Philippines faces stiff competition next against Canada — a team which finished third in the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing — on Tuesday, October 21 (Wednesday, October 22 in Manila).

In the tournament which could possibly give them a spot in the World Championship, the Philippine curlers started out strong, standing third in the standings after their first match.

The Top 5 teams in the tournament get a slot in the World Championship.

Meanwhile, the women’s team is undefeated in Division B, winning their second match also on Monday.

The Filipina curlers, Katie Dubberstein, Leilani Dubberstein, Jessica Byers, and Lindsey Schmalz, improved to 2-0 with a victory over Puerto Rico, 8-6.

The Philippines needed to break a 6-all tie with a 2-0 scoreline in the 9th end to seal their victory.

Kazakhstan is up next for the Filipina curlers also on Tuesday, October 21 (Wednesday, Manila time).
