The Philippine men’s curling team won six games in the Pre-Olympic Qualifying Event in Aberdeen, Scotland.
The Philippine men’s curling team’s dream of making it to the Winter Olympics got a major boost as they secured their place in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament this December in Kelowna, Canada.
Playing in a pre-Olympic Qualifying Event in Scotland, the Philippines notched a perfect 6-0 slate against teams like Australia, Austria, Chinese Taipei, Denmark, New Zealand, and Poland to finish at the top of the tournament and seal their place in the qualifiers.
The team, bannered by skip Marc Pfister along with Enrico Pfister, Christian Haller, Brayden Carpenter, and alternate Alan Frei, began the tournament with a 7-4 victory over Denmark.
They then followed it up with an absolute dominant display over Chinese Taipei, 10-0.
New Zealand proved to be one of the tougher tests for the Philippines as they needed to fend off their foes late, 6-5.
The Philippines also ended up winning over Austria, Australia, and Poland.
Because of their sweep, the Philippines became the first of three teams that will head to the Olympic qualifiers from the event.
In the qualifiers later this year, teams that the Philippines may face include the United States, China, Japan, Netherlands, and South Korea.
The Philippines has yet to qualify for a team sport in the Winter Games.
The men’s curling team, which also won a gold medal in the recent Asian Games, are vying for a spot in the 2026 Winter Olympics at Milano Cortina.
