For over two decades, LeBron James has been more than just a basketball player—he has been a global icon whose influence stretches far beyond the NBA.

In the Philippines, where basketball is more than just a pastime, LeBron holds a special place in the hearts of fans.

James' mix of longevity, dominance, and connection with the Filipino community has made him an enduring figure in the country’s basketball culture.

As the NBA star enters a historic 23rd season, PBA stars shared their thoughts on why Filipinos love LeBron and what makes him unique compared to other all-time greats.

Longevity and dedication

For TNT superstar Calvin Oftana, LeBron’s staying power is what sets him apart.

“Sa era ko, I saw LeBron play. Tsaka ‘yung gano'n siya katagal maglaro na sa NBA, so I think isang special yun sa akin na alam niyo, gano'n siya katagal. Lalo'ng, para siyang patagal na patagal, pagaling na pagaling,” Oftana told One Sports during Titan’s unveiling of its "Legacy Wall" tribute to LeBron.

While some fans grew up idolizing Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, Oftana admits that LeBron James defined his basketball generation.

“Isang malaking bagay ‘yun sa pagiging basketball player ko. ‘Yung paano niya inalagaan katawan niya. And siguro sa Filipino fans din naman kasi palagi siya dito pumunta sa Pinas. I think pag bumalik siya dito is a big thing. Talaga maraming manonood.”

The same sentiment was shared by Phoenix Fuel Master forward Kai Ballungay, who pointed out how LeBron’s remarkable longevity continues to inspire players and fans alike.

“Speaking of longevity, LeBron will enter his 23rd season soon. Just any thoughts on that? Just seeing how a player can go through so much through a long period of time, and he's still in great shape," he said.

"I feel like he can still go more years, so it's great to see him go through as much as he has, and the longevity of how long he's been here is great,” Ballungay added.

More than basketball

Meanwhile, Barangay Ginebra big man Isaac Go sees LeBron as the natural successor in the long lineage of basketball icons.

To him, LeBron represents the player who defined an entire era, much like Jordan and Kobe before him.

“I think parang we all have this NBA icon na gusto natin panoorin. At the start, it was Jordan, then you had Kobe, then after nun si LeBron. Every generation, there’s always been someone, and for our generation, it’s really LeBron,” Go shared.

Rain or Shine rising star Gian Mamuyac, on the other hand, sees it as LeBron’s off-court impact in the Philippines that resonates deeply, particularly his partnership with Filipino basketball culture through his shoes.

“If I remember correctly, siya ata yung pinakaunang may collab shoes with Titan. And ang dami na eh, ang dami na niyang collab shoes with Titan, which, I think every collab shoes may sinasabi siya or may lesson siya na different from each other. May agimat, may equality,” Mamuyac recalled.

True enough, LeBron has an expansive library of Philippine-inspired shoes, with eight distinct colorways from his signature line ranging from the long-standing "Agimat" series to the most recent collaboration evoking a message of "Hope."

Mamuyac added that LeBron’s recognition of the Philippines as a basketball-loving nation makes his legacy even more meaningful locally.

“LeBron James is an icon all over the world, and for him to recognize the Philippines, which is a really huge basketball country, is really big.”

From his Titan collaborations to multiple visits to Manila, the King has built a bond with Filipinos that goes beyond highlights and championships.

For PBA stars and everyday Filipinos alike, LeBron is not just an NBA legend—he’s part of their basketball story.
