Alex Eala's WTA 125 Suzhou Open run ended in the quarterfinals after falling short in a tense three-set duel against Swiss veteran Viktorija Golubic.
Alex Eala’s spirited run at the Suzhou WTA 125 came to an end on Friday, as she fell to seasoned Swiss campaigner Viktorija Golubic in a hard-fought three-set quarterfinal clash, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(0).
Seeded fourth in the tournament, Eala stormed back from a 0-2 deficit in the opener, stringing six straight games behind sharp returns and well-timed breaks to pocket the set, 6-2.
But Golubic, the sixth seed and a 2021 Wimbledon quarterfinalist, flipped the momentum in the second frame.
Using her precision and variety, she rattled off the first four games and cruised to a 6-2 win of her own, forcing yet another decider for Eala, who had already endured back-to-back three-setters earlier in the week.
Eala looked composed early in the final set, edging ahead 6-5 and standing within sight of victory.
But Golubic’s experience showed at crunch time as she erased Eala’s 40-15 advantage, forced a tiebreak, and then shut the door with a flawless 7-0 sweep.
