Alex Eala dropped only three games in a strong Round of 16 showing against Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi, barreling into the 2025 Jingshan Open quarterfinals.
This time around, Alex Eala went full throttle early and never looked back.
Unlike her grueling two-hour opener, Eala needed just an hour and 12 minutes to beat Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi, 6-0, 6-3 to punch her ticket to the 2025 Jingshan Open quarterfinals on Thursday, September 25 (PH time).
With the victory, the Filipina star has now reached the final eight in three consecutive tournaments, including in São Paulo and Guadalajara.
Eala came out firing, breaking her Japanese opponent’s serve thrice to claim a bagel in the opening set in just 26 minutes.
Though Yamaguchi put up some resistance in the second set and stayed within striking distance at 3-4, the 20-year-old lefty held the fort and took the final two games to wrap up the straight-set dismissal.
Up next for Eala is either Indian player Riya Bhatia or Chinese athlete Lu Jiajing in the quarterfinals.
