Belgium opened its 2025 FIVB Men's World Championship campaign in style after sweeping Ukraine in Pool F.
World no. 17 Belgium wasted no time announcing its intentions in the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship, dismantling Ukraine in straight sets, 25-16, 25-17, 25-22, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, September 14.
The Red Dragons dictated the pace from the opening serve, banking on the explosive scoring of 22-year-old opposite spiker Ferre Reggers, who tallied 23 points on 20 attacks and three blocks.
Seppe Rotty and Sam Deroo added 13 and 12 markers, respectively.
After cruising through the first two sets, Belgium fended off a spirited third-set push from Ukraine, before Reggers and his teammates shut the door with a composed finish.
Blocking also proved to be a difference-maker in the match, with the Belgians putting up 10 rejections as compared to just five from Ukraine.
The win not only gave the Red Dragons a perfect start but also boosted their confidence heading into a marquee Pool F matchup against reigning world champions Italy on Tuesday, September 16.
Ukraine, meanwhile, will try to regroup quickly as it faces fellow winless side Algeria on the same day in hopes of breaking into the win column.
