With Quinley Quezada and Dionesa Tolentin each bagging a brace, the Filipinas delivered a ruthless drubbing of Timor-Leste to open their ASEAN Women's MSIG Serenity Cup title defense on a high.
Too fast, too good, and just too strong.
Quinley Quezada and Dionesa Tolentin each struck twice as the Filipinas jumpstarted their ASEAN MSIG Serenity Cup title defense with a ruthless 7-0 trashing of Timor-Leste at the Viet Tri Stadium in Vietnam, Thursday, August 7.
Chandler McDaniel set up the two of first three Philippine goals inside the first nine minutes in a dominating Group A performance for the defending champions from start to finish.
The debuting Aaliyah Schinaman opened the scoring for the Filipinas in the second minute, slotting in a perfectly placed left-foot strike off a sublime Chandler McDaniel pass inside the penalty box.
Quezada then doubled the Filipinas’ lead five minutes later with a rebound play, before team captain Hali Long made it 3-0 with a towering header from a McDaniel corner in the ninth minute.
The 28-year-old midfielder then scored her second goal of the match, beating Timor-Leste goalkeeper Gorette De Fatima De Deus Andrade Da Costa with a clinical left-foot strike that gave the Philippines their fourth goal with 13 minutes remaining in the first half.
Tolentin then added her name to the scoresheet, striking twice in a span of seven minutes to begin the second half. The first came from a dazzling cross off the right flank that curled perfectly into the net in the 57th minute. Her next one came at the 64th.
Following their rampant outing, the Filipinas are now tied with Myanmar — who shocked Australia 2-1 earlier — at the top of Group A. Both teams boast a flawless 1-0-0 record and three points, but the Philippines enjoyed a superior goal difference.
Adelaide Wyrzynski, who came on as a substitute, took advantage of a Timor-Leste goalkeeper error to net the Philippines’ seventh and final goal in the 75th minute.
The world no. 39 squad dominated possession throughout the one-sided match, creating multiple chances with 13 shots on target.
With momentum on their side, the Filipinas are looking to secure back-to-back wins against the Aussie U-23 team on Sunday, August 10.
