CM Punk was World Heavyweight Champion for mere minutes before Seth Rollins returned from an apparent knee injury to cash-in his MITB briefcase at SummerSlam.
Seth Rollins made a vow, saying CM Punk will never be WWE world champion again under his watch.
At SummerSlam 2025, Rollins made good of that promise.
As Punk vanquished Gunther to win the World Heavyweight Championship, Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to once again pull off a stunning title change.
Coming out with crutches, Rollins only appeared to play mind games on his sworn rival. But the ruse was up, and a seemingly healthy Seth pummeled Punk with the briefcase before delivering a Curb Stomp for the win.
Rollins has been out of action for weeks after an apparent injury in a loss to LA Knight at Saturday Night’s Main Event in July.
It was Rollins’ second successful MITB cash-in of his career, and this victory makes him a two-time World Heavyweight Champion.
The move was set up by Punk beating Gunther for the title, winning his first WWE title since 2013.
After enduring intense punishment, Punk turned the match around by sending Gunther face first to the announce table, busting the powerhouse open.
A Punk flurry followed, culminating in back-to-back GTS to secure the victory.
In other Night 1 results of the first ever two-night SummerSlam, Tiffany Stratton retained her WWE Women's Championship against Queen of the Ring Jade Cargill. In the other women's title match, Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss dethroned Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez as Tag Team champions.
Jey Uso and Roman Reigns defeated Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed in the opener, Sami Zayn edged Karrion Kross, and the team of Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul beat Randy Orton and Jelly Roll to round out the results.
