GlobalPort's Mikee Romero enters top 25 in World Polo Tour amateur rankings

Businessman, lawmaker, and polo enthusiast Mikee Romero has made history as the first Filipino to break into the Top 25 of the World Polo Tour (WPT) amateur rankings.

Romero now sits at World Rank No. 24, with 110 WPT points earned from his debut at the 2025 Gauntlet of Polo—the sport’s most prestigious and grueling series.

He surpasses Thailand’s Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha and Brunei’s Prince Mateen Bolkiah to become Southeast Asia’s highest-ranked amateur player.

Often dubbed the “Olympics of Polo,” the Gauntlet of Polo is held at the National Polo Center in Florida and features three elite tournaments: the C.V. Whitney Cup, the USPA Gold Cup, and the U.S. Open Polo Championship.

“It still feels surreal,” Romero shared. “To be among the Top 25 is a tremendous honor—but this is bigger than me. It’s a milestone for every Filipino who dares to dream, and for a country that’s never had a seat at this table—until now.”

Romero’s GlobalPort Polo Team stunned powerhouse squads La Dolfina/Tamera and Park Place—both eventual champions—en route to a semifinal finish in the C.V. Whitney Cup, a strong showing in the USPA Gold Cup, and a dramatic quarterfinal loss in the U.S. Open, falling 11–10 to La Dolfina/Catamount after holding a one-goal lead with just 80 seconds left. The team also claimed second place in the USPA Bronze Cup and lifted the Sterling Cup.

“For us, it wasn’t just about winning—it was about belonging,” Romero said. “And I believe we’ve earned that right.”

The World Polo Tour ranks players based on their performance in top-tier international tournaments.

“This is just the beginning,” Romero declared. “We’re no longer just spectators—we are players in the arena. And I promise you: the Filipino will ride again.”
