Bought new gear? Don't wear it on race day. Coach Rio de la Cruz shares some beginner tips when it comes to gear as you prepare for your next fun run.
Don't wear new gear on race day.
Except, of course, the singlets given to you for the fun run.
That's just one of the tips provided by coach Rio de la Cruz for beginners getting into their running era.
One of those apparel are socks.
"'Wag gagamit ng bago kasi maaring magkaroon ka ng blisters. Kasi hindi sanay 'yung paa mo, so kailangan mo siya i-break in," the founder and CEO of RUNRIO told One Sports during the launch of the EastWest Dream Run 2025 final leg.
This is also a given for shoes. He also recommends giving some space for your feet, which tend to swell after physical activities.
"Dapat 'yung shoes mo are half or one size bigger para merong space," he said. "Syempre, 'pag mas makapal yung medyas mo, mas malaki 'yung space na kailangan mo."
And in a tropical, humid country like the Philippines, changing weather should also be taken into consideration. For example, should you wear fitted shorts or loose ones?
"Saan ka ba comfortable? Doon sa compression or doon sa split na shorts? Or gusto mo ba 'yung medyo mas mahaba?" De la Cruz asked. "Syempre, magma-matter din 'yung weather."
"Kapag mainit, we don't suggest na magco-compression shorts ka or hanggang leggings na 'di ba? Or hanggang long sleeves ka," he said.

Of course singlets are the exception to the wear nothing new rule, since a lot of fun runs provide their own version for the event.
De la Cruz shared the tips as the final leg of the EastWest Dream Run 2025 will be held this June 15 at Filinvest City in Alabang.
Over 6,000 runners have already participated in the Davao and Cebu legs, and another strong crowd is poised to show up for the Manila leg.
"There’s a genuine sense of heart behind the Dream Run. It’s designed with thought, it’s inclusive, and you can feel how personal the experience is for many runners," said de la Cruz on Wednesday. "Iba talaga ‘yung pakiramdam when you’re running not just for yourself, but alongside an entire community."
The Dream Run will have five categories: the 30K Challenge introduced in honor of EastWest’s 30th Anniversary; the traditional 10K and 5K races; the 2K Kids category; and the 1K Dog Run for pet lovers and their furry companions.
"In Davao and Cebu, we saw all kinds of participants. Some were running their first kilometer, others completed all 30. Each one showed up with a reason, and that shared sense of purpose is what gives the series its meaning. It’s a rare kind of spirit, and one the Bank is proud to help bring to life," said Martin Reyes, EastWest Head of Marketing.
Each participant will receive a premium race kit containing a limited-edition singlet, race bib, and loot bag. Finishers will be awarded a dreamcatcher-inspired medal, and 30K Challenge participants will earn an exclusive finisher’s shirt.
