Are you jumping on the #WeWantCody bandwagon?
The talk of the town in the sports entertainment world right now is Cody Rhodes and his career arc to “finish the story.”
But with a certain Dwayne Johnson in the mix, Rhodes might not actually finish any stories, at WrestleMania 40 at least, where he’s the conventional pick to challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed Universal WWE Championship after winning the 2024 Royal Rumble.
It remains to be seen if Cody actually “loses” his spot to The Rock at WrestleMania, but with “finish the story” arguably the most intriguing storyline going on in WWE right now, what is it anyway?
To catch up, here’s Cody Rhodes’ story so far, as he continues to chase his American Dream.
DREAM RETURN
After years on the independent circuit and becoming a founding member of AEW, Rhodes made his highly-anticipated return to WWE at WrestleMania 38.
Cody defeated Seth Rollins for his first WWE match in six years, starting the first defining rivalry of his return.
HELL IN A CELL
Rhodes pulled off a rare trifecta against Rollins, with the last one coming at Hell in Cell.
In a signature babyface moment, Rhodes wrestled Rollins while having a legitimate pectoral injury. The visual of his bruised chest, on top of an amazing Hell in a Cell match, certainly gave Rhodes enough merit to stay red-hot despite missing time to recover.
ROYAL RUMBLE WINNER
After being sidelined for almost a year, Cody returned at the 2023 Royal Rumble, winning the match after entering at no. 30.
On the Raw after the Rumble, Rhodes made his intentions known, challenging Roman Reigns for his Undisputed title.
SPIKED DOWN
In a main event of truly epic proportions, Cody took it to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 for the Undisputed Universal title.
But even after getting an assist from tag team champions Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, the Bloodline numbers overwhelmed Rhodes, his dream of winning THE belt spiked down as Roman retained, winning their first (and so far, only) encounter.
BEAST’S APPROVAL
After his stinging WrestleMania loss, Brock Lesnar became the main feud for Rhodes.
In a three-match series, Cody won his saga with the Beast Incarnate through a hard-hitting match at SummerSlam, after which Lesnar gave Rhodes his “stamp of approval” if you will.
YEET
Cody’s first taste of championship gold since his WWE return was the Undisputed Tag Team titles, ironically with Jey Uso.
The duo won the title at Fastlane, and while the reign was relatively short at just nine days, being Undisputed Tag Team champion allowed Rhodes to crossover to SmackDown, leading to a tense faceoff with Reigns, their first encounter since WrestleMania.
BEST IN THE RUMBLE WORLD
Cody’s “story” kicked into high gear after winning the 2024 Royal Rumble, making him the first man to win back-to-back since Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Rhodes last eliminated the returning CM Punk, and immediately put his attention on Roman Reigns for the potential rematch. Or is it?
IF YOU SMELL WHAT’S COOKING
The Rock interrupted the Rhodes-Reigns faceoff on the February 2 episode of SmackDown, indicating it’s actually him that will face the Tribal Chief at WrestleMania 40.
A #WeWantCody movement has since commenced, but it remains to be seen just how Cody’s story unfolds, or will he get to finish it at WrestleMania.
