The veteran defender is pursuing her medical studies.
Ryley Bugay, who was part of the historic roster of the Filipinas that saw action in the FIFA Women's World Cup, announced on Tuesday her retirement from football, noting that her decision came "with a heavy heart."
The 27-year-old defender is also pursuing her medical degree at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
"I announce my official retirement from soccer. It’s taken a while for me to process the past few months, and sometimes, I still struggle to find the words to capture the journey, but for now, all I can say is thank you," wrote Bugay on Instagram.
She tipped her hat to her coaches and teammates for molding her to become "the best version" of herself. She also expressed her gratitude to her family and friends, attributing her success to their "sacrifices every step of the way."
Bugay, who was born and grew up in West Lafayette, Indiana, first suited up for the national team in the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup. She was also part of the historic squad that qualified for the FIFA Women's World Cup after beating Chinese Taipei in the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup.
"To the Philippine women’s national team, thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent the country, for bringing me closer to my heritage, and for allowing me to live out a dream and play on the biggest stage possible," added Bugay.
Her Filipinas teammates showered her with love and encouragement with their comments.
"All the best on your next path," said Sara Eggesvik.
"I truly couldn’t have made it this far without you. It won’t be the same but I’m so excited to watch you become my future personal doctor! I love you sm [so much]," said Olivia McDaniel.
Jaclyn Sawicki, Jessika Cowart, Reina Bonta, and Katrina Guillou conveyed their love for Bugay in words and in emojis.
Carleigh Frilles, Alicia Barker, and Sofia Harrison said they are excited about Bugay's future, while Quinley Quezada and Kiara Fontanilla lovingly called her "Dr. Ry."
Malea Cesar, however, had the sweetest message.
"An inspiration on and off the pitch. You deserve all the best things in life," said the 19-year-old midfielder.
Bugay ended her retirement post by honoring the game that she loves the most.
"Finally, to the beautiful game, for giving me more than I could have ever dreamed," said Bugay. "Let the next journey begin."
