Fans will likely know about it by the end of the week.
Whether or not Kai Sotto can join Gilas Pilipinas in time for the FIBA World Cup remains up in the air.
Upon arrival from a relatively successful campaign in the Heywuan WUS International Basketball Tournament in China, coach Chot Reyes was asked about an update about the 7-foot-3 cager but couldn’t really say much.
Uncertainty is expected, though, given how things have panned out since Sotto came home from a stint in the NBA Summer League.
“The last we’ve heard is he’s going to see his doctor again on Thursday, and then [he’s going to] make a decision,” he told News5’s Martie Bautista on Tuesday.
Sotto is getting rehab from a back injury he sustained in his second and last game with the Orlando Magic in the Summer League.
While he reportedly showed up in Gilas practice a few times already, Sotto, who also watched a PVL game recently, is not yet cleared to participate.
In an interview with Quinito Henson on Playitright TV, the 21-year-old reaffirmed his commitment to play.
“I’m committed to play for the national team, kahit anong mangyari,” he said.
Meanwhile, NBA star Jordan Clarkson arrived early Tuesday but will join the team the next day. The Utah Jazz ace will serve as the team's naturalized player in the World Cup this month.
