He has the potential to become the next great big man in the PBA.
6-foot-10. 23 years old. Athletic and agile.
These are just some of the things that make Cypriot-born Filipino cager AJ Edu an interesting prospect to any team in need of a big man. After the knee injuries he endured in the past years, the defiant big's career is back on the fast lane after he completed his senior collegiate season playing all 35 games for the Toledo Rockets.
At 23, Edu possesses two-way skills—and still, untapped potential—that sounds appealing to any pro team.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that multiple post-college options are out there for the Gilas Pilipinas hopeful, who is currently vying for a slot in the Final 12 that will compete in the FIBA World Cup.
On Saturday, Edu confirmed that next on his agenda is indeed to make a living playing hoops.
“Obviously, after college, the natural progression is professional basketball, which is what I am pursuing,” the towering hooper told Power and Play host and former PBA commissioner Noli Eala.
“As to where that will be, I guess time will tell. I’ve signed with an agent and we’re looking at some options.”
How long exactly before AJ makes his decision? Perhaps his timetable says that an announcement should already be in the works not too long from now.
“All I’ll say is in the next few weeks or so, some news will come out,” Edu said.
When probed about whether or not the PBA is included in his plans, the former Gilas under-18 standout didn’t give a direct answer. It’s not an exaggeration to say that his response can be interpreted in several different ways.
“I guess we’ll see,” AJ said before wearing a big smile and chuckling a bit.
