"It was very, very difficult. I like to call it the deepest cut."

Coach Chot Reyes on Thursday reflected on his choice to cut Thirdy Ravena, Ray Parks, Calvin Oftana, and Chris Newsome from the final 12 of the Gilas Pilipinas roster for the FIBA World Cup.

Reyes said he made the choice three days ago and personally delivered the news to the four players.

"They're not gonna find about it on social media," he said. "I called them all at the same time so there was really no final cut."

And Reyes made it clear. The four players were cut not because of any wrongdoings or errors.

"It's not because of anything they did wrong. It's just we had to make choice. We had 16 guys and we had to choose 12," the coach explained.

He also shared why Oftana, Parks, and Ravena were absent while Newsome remained in practice even though he was already cut.

Parks and Thirdy had to report to their teams in the Japan B.League, while Oftana had to attend to his baby in Dumaguete.

"They would have been here with us if not," Reyes said.

For now, Reyes is calling for the support of the home crowd.

"We will need the support and prayers of the crowd. We have to be able to punch above our weight. I think the crowd will be a big determining factor to be able to help us," he said.

Gilas Pilipinas will open the FIBA World Cup on August 25 against the Dominican Republic.
