Gilas Pilipinas on Tuesday looked good in dispatching Bahrain to open its Asian Games campaign on a positive note—encouraging to say the least after what has been a tumultuous lead-up to the Asiad filled with roster upheavals and uncertainties.

That has got to be a good sign because it appears there was still some last-minute drama involving the accreditation of late additions Kevin Alas, Chris Ross, Marcio Lassiter, Arvin Tolentino, and Cjay Perez.

“Up to the last minute, nase-stress si Coach Tim [Cone] sa airport,” Alas told One Sports. “‘Yung accreditation namin dumating 20–30 minutes before the flight, so muntik kami hindi makasakay.”

It turns out, it was better late than never as Alas and company made it to Hangzhou—allowing Cone to field in a 12-player lineup. And the Drunken Master is just happy all that drama is water under the bridge now.

“Really, really grateful na nandito kami ngayon,” Alas added. “Every time na naglalaro ako sa national team, napakalaking honor kasi blessing na nandito tayo. God put me here for a reason, kaya napa-grateful ko sa Panginoon na nandito ko.”

It also appears that Alas is pumped up playing for the winningest coach in PBA history, and he shared the reason to One Sports.

“Grabeng experience playing under Coach Tim. Marami akong natututunan, and I’m sure makakatulong sa career ko ‘to—the knowledge na tinuturo niya sa practice,” Alas pointed out. “Kahit one week pa lang, ibang klase.”

Alas and the rest of Gilas will have to put all those learnings to full use moving forward, as the road to the 5x5 basketball gold figures to get tougher from now on.
