It appears the Filipinas like to score last-minute goals.
The Philippine women’s national football team opened its Asian Games campaign in Hangzhou, China on a positive note with a 3-1 victory over Hong Kong.
It was a dream start for the Filipinas after Sarina Bolden scored on a penalty kick in the 9th minute.
But as the match went on in the first half, Hong Kong would slowly put some pressure on the attack.
This ultimately led to Wai Ki Cheung drilling in a stunning left-footed shot outside the penalty box to beat Filipinas’ goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel in the 39th minute.
Come the second half, Hong Kong would continue to frustrate the Filipinas, leaving them groping for form on their attacks.
But it seems like the Filipinas just have a knack for scoring last-minute goals. And that tendency saved them this time.
In the 89th minute, Quinley Quezada proved to be the hero for the Philippines as she put the ball into the back of the net after a wild scramble inside the penalty box.
Shortly after that, Katrina Guillou made sure to seal the victory after her solid touch and left-footed shot to find the back of the net.
With the win, newly appointed coach Mark Torcaso notched his first victory with the Filipinas. But this figures to be just the beginning, as he is hoping for a deep run with the squad in the tournament.
Up next for the 44th-ranked Filipinas will be a huge match against South Korea on September 25.
