After orchestrating the University of Santo Tomas’ potent offense throughout the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament, Cassie Carballo bagged the Best Setter award in just her sophomore season.

Carballo became just the second UST setter to win the award, and the first since Denise Tan who was hailed the Best Setter back in Season 69.

The 21-year-old setter from Silay City bested Julia Coronel of De La Salle University and Heart Magsambol of the University of the Philippines for the award.

Carballo had 236 ranking points (RPs) after finishing 31st in blocking, 2nd in serving, 35th in digging, and 1st in setting. This was nine points higher than Coronel, who finished second with 227 RPs, while Magsombol had 193 RPs.

Aside from Carballo, several other UST stars also secured awards for Season 86.

Angge Poyos became the sixth Golden Tigress since Season 63 to be named Rookie of the Year. She was also hailed as the second Best Outside Hitter for Season 86.

Poyos came close to becoming the third-straight Rookie-MVP winner after finishing second in scoring, third in spiking, 16th in blocking, first in serving, 23rd in digging, and 15th in receiving, for 76.964 statistical points. She finished second for MVP behind NU rival Bella Belen.

Meanwhile, Detdet Pepito easily took home the Best Libero award, beating Adamson University’s Karen Verdeflor and National University’s Shaira Jardio in a rather convincing fashion.
